The UBS Graduate Program

The UBS graduate recruitment program hired 300 graduates in 2013 and continues to offer a highly competitive graduate program. This is due to their self-belief that hiring the best people for the job will make them even better. They do this by having a very rigorous job application process that involves many steps which will be outlined below in greater detail. These steps are:

The UBS Graduate Training Program

The UBS graduate careers program offered by UBS is a course lasting between 18-24 months. We will go through the application process to this program here. However, for any position that you apply for at UBS, you will almost definitely have to go through this same process.

With regards to the UBS graduates application form itself there are a few different areas where you can show that you are the perfect candidate. There are normally two competency questions which generally are:

  • Why did you choose to apply to this business area as opposed to another?
  • When have you taken a new or innovative approach in order to achieve a desired outcome?

It’s important to bear in mind when answering these questions that they want to hear if you know the seven key core competencies at UBS. They are:

  1. Problem analysis
  2. Judgment and decision making
  3. Innovation
  4. Communication and impact
  5. Drive and commitment
  6. Teamwork and collaboration
  7. Planning and organizing

These competencies are viewed at UBS in the highest regard and your application is scored using these as a guide. It is therefore essential to try and incorporate these as much as you can in your answers to these questions.

The UBS Numerical Test

Following a successful application, you will be asked to complete a series of online tests proving your competency and skill assessing your ability to fit into the company. You will be given two tests that are created by SHL and the first one will be the UBS numerical test. This tests asses your ability to identify trends across a wide range of data and combine statistics from different sources to establish new information patterns.

The UBS Verbal Reasoning Test

Following on from the UBS numerical test you will need to complete a verbal reasoning test as well. This will assess your ability to comprehend a passage and answer questions on it in a very short time frame. You are normally given about 20 minutes to answer 25 questions. These tests are used to assess different aspects of critical thinking. Practising both the numerical and verbal reasoning tests will enable you to be your best when you actually come to take them.

The UBS Logical Reasoning Test

As part of the UBS application process, you are likely to receive the UBS logical test. This is a logical test provided by SHL whereby you use your logical skills in a non-verbal way. Your verbal skills are not being assessed here, rather your logical ones are. You will be presented with a series of different shapes that contain various different thought patterns. You will have to analyse these different shapes and interpret them in order to work out the next or missing picture. As you only have approximately 30 seconds per question on the UBS logical reasoning test a high understanding of these tests is needed in order to be successful. Find out how we can help you overcome this UBS online logical aptitude test here.

The UBS Interview

If you have completed these stages of the application process then you will receive an email or phone call asking you to have a telephone interview with one of the HR people at UBS. This is competency based and you will need to fully understand the seven core competency requirements that we mentioned earlier. This is how you are going to be assessed. Once you are clear on these, you will also need to understand what role you have applied for. Thus, there will be two types of questions. Some of the UBS interview questions will be competency based questions such as, “Describe a time when you had to take charge of a project?” and, “Tell me about a time when you made a mistake and had to face the consequences. What did you do and how did you solve the problem?”

There will also be job skills questions. These are completely independent of your competency and are used to test your skill level and if you have what it takes in the job. For example, if you applying for a technology position you may be asked, “how do you think cloud computing can be utilised by UBS to make us better?” If you are applying for an analyst position you may be asked, “What was the greatest risk you took in the last year?”

In all of these questions, it is your opportunity to shine. Make sure you do your research about the company and about the job in particular. Moreover, make sure that you have clear answers for each of the possible questions that your interviewer could ask you. It is advisable to use the STAR method as this gives the best snapshot of your abilities.

If you do well in the interview then you will be on your way to the UBS assessment centre.
