Transport for NSW Careers – Bus Driver

There are many steps and stages to becoming a bus driver with the State Transit Authority that you will need to prepare for. The stages in this process will include:

  • Application Process: Applying for one of the available State Transit Authority jobs can be done in person or online. If you choose to apply in person you will need to register to attend the next Open Day assessment centre. If you are applying online, a member from the State Transit recruitment team will be in contact with you to schedule a time for you to complete the recruitment assessment.
  • Depot Open Day: The Depot Open Day will usually run for half a day and includes an information session, depot tour, interview, and various assessment activities. During the Open Depot assessment day, you will be provided with all of the information you will need in regard to the bus driver position with the State Transit Authority NSW.

Pre-Employment Checks & Exams

Pre-employment checks will come once you have passed the assessment stage of the hiring process. Pre-employment checks will consist of the following:

  • Health Assessments: During this stage of the pre-employment process you will be required to go through a medical assessment, a functional assessment to determine your physical fitness level, as well as a drug/ alcohol test required under legislation.
  • Working With Children Check Clearance: All drivers must have a current NSW Working with children clearance. You will need to apply for the clearance directly from the Office of Children’s Guardian website.
  • Reference Checks: To pass the reference checks, you will need to have provided a minimum of two referees who are able to confirm your capacity to work as a bus driver. You should provide reference information for previous supervisors or managers who will be able to comment on your previous work performance.
  • Medium Rigid (MR) Knowledge Exam: If you do not currently hold an MR licence, you will need to go to Service NSW to complete the MR knowledge test to attain an MR learner’s permit. You will also be required to obtain a copy of the MR Licence Logbook.
  • NSW Bus Driver Authority Card If you do not currently hold an NSW Bus Driver Authority Card, you will need to apply for one through Roads and Maritime Services (RMS).
  • Driver Evaluation: During this section of the State Transit Authority recruitment process you will be evaluated on your ability to drive the bus safely or your ability to quickly learn how. You will be evaluated and guided by a heavy vehicle driving instructor.

State Transit Authority Interview Process

During the State Transit Authority interview process, you will be asked a variety of questions regarding your previous work experience and workplace behaviours. Below you will find several examples of questions that you are likely to be asked during the State Transit Authority interview process:

  • What would you do in case of being involved in a motor vehicle accident?
  • Why would you like to work for the State Transit Authority?
  • How would you handle an irate or upset passenger?

We recommend using the STAR interview method when answering behavioural-style questions.
