What is a cover letter?

A cover letter is sent to potential employers along with a CV when looking for a job.  It is included as a part of a CV for many reasons including self marketing, individualization, and personal expression. It is a vital part of a CV and can be of great value to job seekers.

Cover Letters can be introductions

The cover letter is a way for job seekers to introduce themselves to potential employers. It is often used as a highly valuable self marketing tool in which job seekers can describe their compatibility with the position being offered. Because the information in a CV can often be short and abrupt the cover letter allows candidates the opportunity to expand on who they are. Job seekers can include more personal information in a cover letter providing employers with a greater picture of who the candidate is.

Using a cover letter to stand out

In many cases all of the candidates applying for a single position can be very similar in terms of academic background or work history. Often cover letters are used as a means of standing out among a large group of candidates for a given position. Because the cover letter offers jobseekers a chance to delve a little deeper into who they are and why they would like the job being offered, it can be used as an excellent tool to differentiate oneself from other candidates.
