What Is the Technology, Media, and Telecom Industry?

The Technology, media, and telecom (TMT) Industry is also called the Technology, Media, and Communications (TMC) Sector. This industry attracts a lot of investors, traders, and investment bankers who view it as a source of earning large profits. This sector is complex, bringing together companies specializing in different areas of media and communication. For this reason, the Technology, Media, and Communication Industry is subdivided into several sectors: hardware, software, internet, mobile, networking, and semiconductors. Some companies, however, cannot be clearly pigeonholed, because they conduct business across several subsectors.  Below is the explanation of the subdivisions into businesses in the TMT can be slotted:

Telecom – This sector conducts communications-related businesses. Among them are phone, television, and internet services. The most famous telecom companies in the United Kingdom are BT, Vodafone, EE Limited, Three UK, O₂, Virgin Media, TalkTalk Group, and VOIP.

Hardware – This group consists of companies that make computers and server systems. They also produce mobile device headsets, tablets, and storage devices such as hard drives and memory. Revenues in this sector come from manufacturing hardware products, among which are telecommunication equipment, computers, and mobile handsets. Some of the representatives of this sector in the UK are CMS Computers, English Electric Computers, GEC Computers, Tao Group, Torch computers, and Vigilant Applications, among others.

Internet – These companies exist online. The most popular of them are Facebook, LinkedIn, and Groupon.

Software – Companies belonging to this sector produce computer or mobile applications. The largest software companies trading on the London Stock Exchange are Sage Group, MicroFocus International, AVEVA Group, Sophos Group PLC, Fidessa Group PLC, Craneware PLC, SDL, and ACCESSO Technology Group PLC.

Networking – Companies in this sector maintain, install, and produce components for wired and wireless computer networks.  These components include but not limited to fiber optic cable, switches, and routers. Revenues in this section derives from providing access to fixed and mobile voice and data networks. They also stem from operating cable and satellite TV broadcasting networks. Several representatives of networking companies in the UK are Arbonne International, Utility Warehouse, and Amway.

Media – This sector includes companies that develop, produce, and distribute multimedia content on TV and radio, in print and online. All television networks, companies that provide cable TV, production studios, and social media companies are included in this group. The most popular media companies in the United Kingdom are Channel 4, Immediate Media, Archant, Economist Group, Penguin Random House, Ink, BBC, ITV, Trinity Mirror, and Financial Times.

IT Services – This Sector is comprised of IT services and software companies. There are also some hardware firms and network operators that make money in this category. In the first category, there are such companies as Risk Vision, Pomeroy, Scale Focus, Valtech, Risk IQ, and Ballard Chalmers, among others. Combined, the companies in this grow annually grow their revenue by 8.6 percent.

Semiconductor Manufacturers – These companies develop and produce integrated circuits and microchips needed for different applications used in personal computers and mobile devices to robotics and industrial machinery. The most famous UK companies in this sector are AEI Semiconductors, Elliott Automation, Microelectronics, Ferranti Semiconductors, Plessey Semiconductors, CML, Inmos, ARM, Wolfson Microelectronics, and Cambridge Silicon Radio, among others.

The Technology, Media, and Telecom Sector on average grows 8.4 percent annually. Revenues in this industry have grown by 12.6 percent every year, since 2006. The most profitable sector in the TMT is Networking, taking up to 40 percent of total revenues. After Networking follows hardware, taking up to 30 percent of the total revenues in the TMT. IT services and Software are the third, earning 22 percent of the overall revenues.

The Technology, Media, and Communication Industry is a quickly growing one. There are, therefore, plenty of job opportunities for college graduates and professionals with experience. Below are several professions that are popular in the TMT Industry:

The Network Engineer

This job is similar to those of the Hardware Engineer and Network Designer. To perform this job well, you need to be tech savvy, because it is the most technically demanding profession in TMT Sector. The major duties that Network Engineers perform are setting up, administering, maintaining, and upgrading communication systems, local area networks, and wide area networks. Other responsibilities that they shoulder are security, data storage, and disaster recovery strategies. As a rule, Network Engineers hold either telecoms or computer science degree. The skills that you need to posses to work as a Network Engineer are good communication, excellent planning skills, analyzing and problem-solving abilities, and a good knowledge of network.

The Software Developer

This profession is similar to the professions of the Software Engineer, the Software Architect, the Web Developer, the Mobile Developer, the Systems Developer, and the Test Automation Developer. People working in these professions have similar responsibilities. They build programs, applications, and websites. Software Developers also write and test codes, for which they use development tools. They also look for solutions needed by the system. Software Developers must have a degree in Computer Sciences or Software Engineering, or in other related disciplines. Skills that the Software Developer should possess are as follows: good logical thinking, attention to detail, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work in teams.

The Business Analyst

This position is similar to those of the Business Architect and Information Specialist. Specialists working in these professions use information technology to identify opportunities for the improvement of processes and business operations. The Business Analyst studies customers’ needs, gathers and then documents requirements, and then creates a project plan of how to come to a technology solution. Business Analysts also supervise test cases and process change request. They also manage projects. There are several degrees that a person can have to be employed as a Business Analyst. In addition to a bachelor’s degree in the Business Analytics, you can hold a degree in Information Technology and Business Administration. You may also be asked to obtain IIBA™CBAP™ certification. Business Analysts should understand how the business flows operationally and how to analyze the business process. They should have a good knowledge of software to understand how it supports the business workflows. To know how information is stored and maintained by the company is also a must.

The IT Support Analyst

The job of the IT Support Analyst is similar to those of the Helpdesk Support Analyst and Technical Support Analyst. Main responsibilities of the IT Support Analyst are to provide technical set-up, support, and advice to IT users. To do so, IT support analysts contact their clients via email, phone, or social media. They also provide services within the organization in which they work or to external businesses. To work in this role, you should hold an IT-related degree. Skills that IT Support Analyst should have are good tech knowledge, problem solving skills, good communication skills, and patience.  

The IT Consultant

This role is similar to that of the Technical Consultant. It consultants provide technical expertise to clients. They develop and implement IT systems for them. Their other responsibilities include but not limited to designing the system, managing projects, and developing the code. To work in this profession, you will need to have a technical degree. The skills that you are expected to possess are as follows: good technical and business understanding, excellent communication skills, project management skills, and a good ability to work as a part of the team.
