Midwifery is one of the most rewarding careers, but courses have limited places available. In addition, those wishing to join courses are required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council to sit a midwifery numeracy and literacy test as part of the course’s entry requirements. An interview is also required to make sure you are suited to the programme and vice versa. Only candidates with good results in both assessments are considered for the course, so it is highly recommended to practise beforehand. Find out how you can prepare for these tests with JobTestPrep.

Midwifery Numeracy Tests

The numeracy tests examine your ability to use mathematical functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and work with a calculator. In general, the test is 15 minutes in length and has six questions. You may be given two test papers, one to be taken with a calculator and one without. The question topics include measurements such as volume, weight and length and drug calculations.

Midwifery Literacy Tests

The literacy test is an assessment of your reading comprehension skills and your ability to give over information clearly and correctly. This means correct spelling, use of grammar and punctuation. These tests are generally 30 minutes long with 12 questions. During the test you will be asked to complete sentences, choose correct pronouns and put together compound words.

Preparation for these assessment tests is vital as you must pass them in order to continue to the later stages of the course application. Using practice tests helps you familiarise yourself with the question styles as well as working in such a short time span. To get you on track, our verbal and numerical preparation pack contains practice questions, study guides and tutorials.

Midwifery Interview

A second major part of the application to a midwifery course is the interview. During this interview, assessors are looking at your motivations and expectations for the role to make sure you are the best person for the course.
