Preparing for The Hiring Process at Medela

The hiring process can take 5 weeks and will consist of three face-to-face interviews and a number of tests. Some tests are general, while others are specific to the job you are applying for. The general required skills, as advertised by the company, are as follows:

  • Analytical, organizational, decision making, and problem-solving skills
  • Flexibility and creativity


Medela Interview Process

There are several interviews that you will have to participate in. These include two or more of the following:

  • A phone interview. A phone interview, which will be conducted via phone and can take between 15-30 minutes. You will go over your resume and be asked questions regarding your salary expectations, work history, availability etc. If you successfully pass this interview, you will be either invited to participate in a video interview or an initial face to face interview.
  • Face-to-face interviews. Face-to-face (or in-person) interviews are a series of interviews, usually three, with multiple people. These will include the HR representative, your direct superior and the head of the department.
  • You may have to participate in case interviews. You will be presented with the case question. You will have time to solve the question and will subsequently need to present your findings. This part of the interview is intended to be more of a dialogue. You will need to be proactive and ask questions when attempting to close in on the correct conclusion. Often times the consultant will attempt to guide you into the correct territory by asking questions himself. The interviewers will be looking at how well you suggest implementing your proposals.
  • Group interviews. A group interview involves multiple interviewers and multiple candidates. You will be in a room with between 10-40 other candidates and 4-6 interviewers. Each interviewer will ask each candidate a question. You may be required to participate in a group exercise like a presentation or a case study.


Medela’s Tests and Assessments

These tests are provided by CEB’s SHL Talent Measurement. The number, type, and level of tests you will need to take depend on the role for which you are applying. These tests include:

  • CEB SHL Numerical Test: On the test, you are presented with different numerical data items in the form of graphs and tables. After careful analysis of the figures, you need to answer multiple choice questions relating to the data.
  • CEB SHL Verbal Reasoning Test: This test is designed to assess how well you use written information. You will be presented with a paragraph of text and a statement based on that text. You need to come to a conclusion as to whether this statement is true, false, or impossible to say based on the text presented.
  • CEB SHL Logical Reasoning Test: On this test, you are presented with a series of shapes following some pattern. Your task is to identify this pattern and choose the next shape in the sequence from a list of options.
  • Personality Test: The purpose of the SHL personality test is to assess how well you fit with Medela values.
  • Situational Judgement Test: On this assessment, you are presented with a number of different work-based scenarios and a series of potential responses to those situations. You must choose the responses you find most and least effective.


Possible Interview Questions

Some of the interviews follow a standard formula and have standard questions. Here are some of the common questions that come up during interviews:

  • What makes you a stronger candidate than your peers?
  • Why are you the best person for the job?
  • How do you handle stress and pressure?
