What Is the Civil Service?

A person working in the Civil Service sector is employed by the government of the New Zealand and thus subscribes to its policies and laws. The Civil Services are referred to also as the public sector, which means that its employees work in the areas that affect the quality of people’s everyday life. Among these areas are health and education.

The governmental sector is divided into ministerial and non-ministerial departments. The difference between these departments is that employees working there take on dissimilar responsibilities. Yet it is highly common in the Civil Services sector to move employees from one department to another. Thus, you may be transferred from a ministerial to non-ministerial department and vice versa. Although a shift into a new department does not entail a loss of benefits or employment rights, there is a certain downside to such mobility. Employees may not be warned about the reconfiguration of the departments in advance and may move to a totally different department on a very short notice.

What Jobs Are Done in the Civil Service Sector?

Jobs performed in the Civil Service have a wide scope, since there are numerous governmental departments and executive agencies. Among these departments and agencies, you can find job in the following fields, depending on your area of specialization:

  • Border Control
  • Health
  • Education
  • Agriculture

The roles you can perform in these areas are various. You can be an administrator and do research, work on policy documents, and compile reports. The administrative position is open across different departments in the Civil Services sector. Other popular positions can be found in the office management department along with the finance and human resources departments. Note that you can find job in the Civil Services even if you are specializing in medicine, law, and engineering, because the government of New Zealand also employs professionals in these fields, just as it hires nurses, geologists, and even surveyors. Other professions such as advisors are unique to the Civil Service sector, which means that special advisors are hired on certain terms and can have high salaries.

The Numerical Reasoning Test

Many jobs in the Civil Service require good knowledge of mathematics and algebra. Employees are expected to make calculations quickly and accurately. Many positions also require employees understand and correctly interpret information given in charts, diagrams, and statistical tables. To ascertain that their prospective employees indeed possess good numerical skills, employers invite them to pass the Numerical Reasoning Test. On this test, job applicants are asked to answer questions about the data appearing in statistical tables and charts. After having analyzed this data, you will need to select one correct answer to a posed question among incorrect options. The Numerical Reasoning Test is strictly timed. You will not be given a time extension, if you answer questions slower than expected. Herein lies the difficulty of the test: you will have less than half a minute to answer each question. Coming to the test unprepared may, therefore, lead to failure on the test and a subsequent loss of an opportunity to be shortlisted for a face-to-face interview. Do not lay your career on the line by not studying before you show up for the Numerical Reasoning Test. Prepare with JobTestPrep’s all-inclusive resources, improve the accuracy of your calculations and your time record, and become chosen for your applied position.
