Baker & Mckenzie is a US based, major international law firm with offices worldwide. Their London office (the only office in the UK) is their biggest office. The application process for Baker & McKenzie contains four stages. These stages will test you whilst also assuring the firm your skills match what they are looking for. You will only have the opportunity to sit each stage of the application process once before you can move on to the next stage, so preparation is vital throughout the process. Baker & McKenzie Application Form

The Baker & McKenzie application form stands out with the request for a cover letter. The cover letter is your opportunity to tell Baker & McKenzie about you and why you are a good candidate for them. They will use what you put in the cover letter to assess what drives you, your knowledge about the sector and your role, understanding of the firm, self-awareness, and your ability to communicate concisely and focus on the most relevant points. Before writing your cover letter, ensure that you have read up on Baker & McKenzie, list some of the key points you want to include, and make sure you include them, and remember to tailor your letter to the firm and why you have chosen to apply to them.

The cover letter should contain some key points:

  • Your reasons for wishing to pursue a career in commercial law.
  • Your motivation for applying to Baker & McKenzie.

Baker & McKenzie Online Aptitude Tests

If your application form meets their expectations, you will be invited to take an online test. Baker & McKenzie use the Watson Glaser test for this stage. 

The Watson Glaser Test

The Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA) is an industry standard for assessing candidates’ reasoning skills and logical capabilities. This unconventional, highly difficult test lasts 30 minutes and contains 40 questions. 5 different sections are scored to find the top players in terms of comprehending, interpreting and analyzing texts:

  • Inference
  • Recognising assumptions
  • Deduction
  • Interpretation
  • Evaluation of arguments

Baker & McKenzie Telephone Interview

The next stage of the application process is the telephone interview. This interview will be a competency based interview with a member of the graduate recruitment team. The interview is designed to draw out your abilities and skills against key competencies. As the interview is on the telephone, feel free to prepare written notes with answers to some of the questions you feel could come up (or the list below). They will be looking for examples to illustrate each of your answers. The best way to do this is through the STAR method. Baker & McKenzie Assessment Centre

The Baker & McKenzie assessment day will test you in different ways. As well as the more formal exercises, there will be a lunch with trainees and associates, which is a good opportunity for you to find out more about what it is like to work for the firm in a less formal setting.

Group Exercise

Each member of the group will be given a mock business scenario to read over before the group come together to address it. The task you will be given will ask you to work towards set objectives. You will be assessed on the quality and substance of the contributions you make, as well as how well you work with the rest of the group. Partner Interview with Case Study

You will have two interviews at the assessment centre. One interview is an interview with up to two partners, most of which will focus on a case study. Case Study

You will be given 30 minutes to read through a business or legal case study individually. Once in the interview, you will discuss your commercial and legal issues and observations, thoughts and opinions on the case study. Baker & McKenzie is looking for you to demonstrate good commercial instincts, problem solving skills and the ability to discuss a business scenario confidently and credibly. They are looking for signs of intelligence, persuasiveness, quick thinking and flexibility, confidence and a desire to learn. The second part of this interview will discuss the information on your application form, your interests, your interest in the firm and any questions you might have about the firm and training contract. It may be some time since you filled in your application form, so remember to revise what you wrote on it, and update it with any new information in the meantime. Take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions with partners, asking them about their opinions on something current, or something you have discussed, or about the cases they have worked on for the firm. Do not make the questions personal, about you, or too simple. This section of the interview will test you in a very different way to the earlier section. Baker & McKenzie Associate Interview

In this interview you will meet with an associate in the firm who will ask you questions based on the competencies and skills Baker & McKenzie is looking for. You will need to use examples from your experience to demonstrate how you address these requirements. The interview will also discuss your application form and why you want to work in commercial law and with Baker & McKenzie.

Baker & McKenzie’s top tips for interviews:

  • Be yourself.
  • Do your research on the company and re-visit your research before the interview.
  • Ensure that you are able to identify and articulate your motivation towards commercial law, and why you are passionate about the opportunities we offer.
  • Enjoy the interview and try to project confidence, even if you are nervous.
  • Think about the question before answering. There is no right or wrong, they want to see how you answer. If you need to start again, ask if you can do so.
  • Keep your answers brief.
  • If it helps, take your questions with you into the interview. Try to make sure they are not obvious, that will show up poor research.
