Sydney Trains Recruitment Process

Working for Sydney Trains requires passing a number of challenging steps, including cognitive tests, interviews and assessment centers. Scroll down to see a quick review of what each step entails.

Sydney Train Verbal Reading Comprehension Tests

Expect a multiple-choice format for each of the two main sections: vocabulary and reading comprehension. In each section, the questions are followed by five alternatives. You are tasked with selecting the best answer to each item. The test assessment involves the ranking of each candidate’s rate of reading, vocabulary skills and reading comprehension ability. Your score is based solely on correct responses. Since there is no penalty for wrong answers, it is to your benefit to answer every question; guess if necessary. Each correct item in the vocabulary section counts as one point, whereas each correct Reading Comprehension question is tallied as two points. The final score is the sum of the results of both parts.

Sydney Trains Situational Judgement Tests

There are typically between 25 – 50 scenarios on any given SJT. The scenarios are usually engaging and challenging. After you are presented with a scenario you will then have to either find the most (or least) suitable response to the scenario or rank/rate the responses in order of effectiveness.

Sydney Trains Personality Tests

There are different kinds of questions found on personality assessment tests. When given a statement with extreme statements such as "always" and "never," you should answer them with less extreme answers such as "agree" and "not strongly agree." However, there are times during a personality test in which you should choose "strongly agree" or "strongly disagree.

Sydney Trains Microsoft Office Tests

These tests are often part of the job recruitment process. They can be taken at any point in the process, although most candidates will take the Microsoft Word test during their interview. The Microsoft Word test measures your ability to complete tasks at various levels and is entirely interactive, attempting to simulate how Word is used in the workplace.

You are evaluated by a series of assessment centre exercises, including both individual and group tasks. These exercises may include an aptitude test, a role-play, a case study, a presentation and an interview. This day gives your prospective employer a rounded profile of your competencies and an insight into your performance in the workplace.

FAQs

What Skills Do Sydney Trains Verbal Tests Measure?

Verbal reasoning tests examine you on a range of English language skills. These skills can be broken down into the following groups: Vocabulary, Grammar, Comprehension, and Critical Reasoning. Vocabulary assessments test your understanding of the words that are used in your line of work. This is measured through various assessments, such as mixed sentences tests, complete the sentence tests, spelling tests, and more. Grammar tests examine your understanding of English grammar and your ability to recognise good or bad grammar. Grammar is measured through questions that ask you to complete a sentence or identify the correct next sentence in a paragraph.

Comprehension tests are designed to measure your ability to understand written information, analyse it, and interpret what you have read to answer questions. Critical Reasoning tests measure how you analyse the information in front of you. In the context of verbal reasoning tests, critical reasoning tests require that you identify whether a statement is true or false based on the information provided, or whether the information provided is not sufficient enough to come to a conclusion.

Do Sydney Trains Personality Tests Reflect the True Me?

When taking a personality test, your results may not always reflect your true self. You must keep in mind that a job personality test shows your work persona. The test is not about seeing personas that are revealed in family life or other contexts.

How Many Scenarios Can I Expect to Encounter in the Sydney Trains SJT?

You can expect to find between 25 – 50 scenarios on any given SJT. The scenarios are usually engaging and challenging. After you are presented with a scenario you will then have to either find the most (or least) suitable response to the scenario or rank/rate the responses in order of effectiveness.

What is the Sydney Trains Telephone Interview?

This is often a preliminary interview. These questions are essentially competency-based questions. The interviewers are looking for you to provide examples of where you have displayed these competencies in the past. The telephone interview has some advantages over a regular interview - you can wear comfortable clothing, and keep your answers written out in front of you, but it can also contain the same pressure as an interview when it comes to answering questions.

How Long Does Sydney Trains Assessment Day Last?

Assessment centres usually consist of a four to eight-hour schedule over one or two days, although, in some rare cases, they may last for three days. The exact schedule for each employer varies for the simple reason that every company does things its own way.
