Expect tough questions in the interview process, but also be ready to ask your own questions as well. While they interview you, you must be prepared to do the same. Here are some ideas:
Why did you leave your last position? There is a very high possibility this question will come up. They want to know if you were fired; if you left on your own, and if so why; did you maintain a good relationship with your former boss; and what they can glean about your work values. Remember never bad-mouth your former employee.
Where do you see your career in 5 years? This question is kind of a trick question. The will not want to invest their time, energy and money into someone who will skip town in one to two years, they want you in for the long-haul. Explain that you want to learn everything there is to know about the job and perfect your skill-sets to higher levels. Moreover, you see yourself taking on more responsibility in the company, as a result of your hard work.
Where do I stand via the other candidates? Only ask this question if you feel that you have a very strong rapport with the interviewer and try to use it as a springboard for follow up questions or to address their concerns. If you are told that another candidate has X-skill that you have not mentioned you can allay concerns be either talking about that skill or by mentioning that have no problem learning it.
How will the hiring process move forward? This question is for the confident only. Asking this will help you clarify the timeline, show them you want to the position and kind of force them to hint to you if you are moving forward or not. If you get an answer like “we will be in touch” keep up the job search.
