About Royal Bank of Scotland PrepPacks™

The RBS group is one of the biggest banking institutions in the world, with over 30 million customers. Since the RBS internship and RBS graduate schemes have a high number of applicants, there is a significant competition over each spot. As a result, the Royal Bank of Scotland's recruitment process is rigorous, but with extensive practice, you can improve your chances of being selected to work there. Find out about the application process and how the product described here can prepare you for it.

RBS Application Process

The Royal Bank of Scotland has an extensive application process for all of its prospective employees.

Once you have chosen a position within the company to apply for, you will need to submit your application along with an up-to-date CV.

The interviewers are looking for you to give examples from your previous experience to back up your answers. Thus, ahead of the interview, review your CV and prepare a list of examples that can be used to demonstrate your skills against the competencies Royal Bank of Scotland is looking for. The Interview PrepPack™ can help you excel during the interview and assessment centre stage of Royal Bank of Scotland's recruitment process.

RBS Online Application

The RBS application form asks you for information about yourself, including your academic results and your skills through a set of five competency questions.

Example application form questions include:

  • Why is this program right for you?
  • Describe a time when you had to come up with a creative solution to a problem.
  • Tell us about a time when you stood up for something that was dear to you.
  • What extra-curricular activities have you done and why?
  • When have you been an inspirational figurehead to help others achieve results?

The competency-based questions hints and tips included in the PrepPack™ can help you in writing an answer that stands out.

RBS Aptitude Tests

If you have completed the online application successfully, next up is a series of three RBS online tests. The first is the situational judgment test (also known as SJT) followed by numerical and then logical reasoning. These online tests are from Talent Q’s Elements series.

RBS Situational Judgment Test

In the RBS Situational Judgement Test, you are presented with 15 different job-related scenarios made up of examples of issues and challenges that could arise in the workplace. Your task is to decide how you would react in this situation by choosing your most and least likely responses. The test is usually 30 minutes long, giving you around two minutes to evaluate each scenario. Practise working through some challenging scenarios with the situational judgment test practice tools.

RBS Numerical Test

If you are successful in the situational judgment test, you will be invited to the numerical testing stage. In the RBS Numerical Reasoning Test, you are given 12 questions that contain information in table form. This test is used to measure your ability to scrutinise numerical information and act upon it. In this test, each question has its own time limit, with 90 seconds allocated for the first question on a new set of information and 75 seconds for the following questions. Talent Q tells employers that the average candidate finishes this test in 12 minutes, meaning that you are under pressure to finish quickly without compromising your accuracy. Get your maths skills in top shape with the Talent Q-style numerical reasoning practice materials.

RBS Logical Reasoning Test

Following a good performance on the numerical test, your next step in the logical test. In the RBS Logical Reasoning Test, you are given a matrix with a number of different shapes, typically nine different shapes arranged in a 3×3 table. You must select the correct shape from one of the 14 different options. Each question has a 75 seconds time limit. This test can be tricky, so practising is essential if you want to succeed. You can do so with the Talent Q-style logical reasoning practice exams.

Online Preparation for the Royal Bank of Scotland Test

A wide range of practice tests has been developed, in order to enable you to prepare for a variety of tests offered at pre-employment assessments. The resources contain exercises designed to bring your numerical skills, reading comprehension and problem-solving abilities to new heights. The tests and drills are always supplied with study guides and answer keys to enable you to identify and eliminate your weaknesses before you take your exam. Therefore, no matter what specific questions your actual test at the company contains, you will be well prepared to pass it successfully and become shortlisted for an interview.

The RBS ABLE Test

There are 21 questions to answer in 45 minutes. You will have two tables, the first of which contains some financial information such as shareholder funds and asset values. The second contains different ratios related to the first table. You have to calculate the investment risk and return for each of the questions. You will be given some guidance notes and the questions will get progressively more difficult. You will be given a calculator for this exercise. Learn more about the ABLE Financial Appraisal.

RBS Telephone Interview

If you successfully complete all of these tests you will be invited to take part in the RBS telephone interview. This interview is split into three different sections. The first section is almost like a test on how much you know about the Royal Bank of Scotland, what they do, why are they different and so on. For the second part of the interview, you will be asked one or two competency questions relating to your job. For the last section of the RBS telephone interview, you will be asked to describe something that you have done that makes you feel proud. You have to show your enthusiasm for the subject chosen as well as why it motivated you. Make sure you answer your questions in the STAR format and you should prepare notes ahead of time for this interview. If you do well enough at this stage of the process you will move onto the next step, the RBS Assessment Centre.

The RBS Assessment Centre

If you have successfully passed the RBS online tests and telephone interview, you will be invited to the RBS assessment centre. In some cases, the online testing and the assessment day are combined to one full day depending on your location. The RBS assessment day includes:

  • Presentation by RBS representative
  • Paper-based numerical reasoning test
  • Financial ABLE test
  • Competency-based interview
  • Individual presentation or role-play exercise and a group exercise

You will also have the chance to meet and ask questions to current RBS employees. If you applied to the international banking department at RBS - particularly those in the RBS graduate careers scheme - you will be required to attend an ability centre before moving on to the RBS assessment centre. Here you will undergo the same type of numerical reasoning test that was mentioned previously.

You will have an interview with a member of the HR team that is fairly similar to the RBS interview that you had already on the phone. Make sure you have researched your position as you will be asked about it and why you feel particularly suited for the job. Additionally, you will be asked some technical questions relating to the job applied for.

With regards to the RBS assessment centre, there are many different types of activities that you will go through depending on whether you applied for an RBS Internship or on the RBS graduate scheme. Depending on what division you have applied for you will get a different set of tasks.

The RBS Case Study Presentation

In this part of the RBS assessment centre, you will be given a lot of information to read through, analyse and collect for a presentation. You will have to go through the information and work out a solution to the problem that comes along with the case study. Then you will give a 10-minute presentation to a team of assessors, as well as answer questions for another 10 minutes. Learn more about how to go through a case study, pull out the relevant information and create an impressive presentation with the online case study pack.

If you do all the requisite preparation and follow through with confidence you will be able to show RBS that you are the best fit for the job.

What is the best way to present my answers in Royal Bank of Scotland's interview?

Competency-based questions are generally asked in an RBS interview. These questions are used in order to understand how you have handled certain situations in the past and how you resolved them. The best format in which to answer these questions is known as the STAR Technique. Use the below information as a guide in answering these questions effectively:

  • Situation: Make sure that you describe the context of the situation you will be discussing.
