Students in their 7th year in Australia take the NAPLAN. The NAPLAN Year 7 Test conducts a comprehensive survey of numeracy, reading, language conventions, and writing. Students have between 40 and 65 minutes to finish each of the NAPLAN test sections.

## NAPLAN Numeracy Year 7

Students in their seventh year take one numeracy test composed of two sections—a calculator permitted section (50 minutes long) and a non-calculator section (10 minutes long).

Year 7 students are tested on five different areas of mathematics:

• Algebra, function, and pattern: In this field, students should identify and interpret simple algebraic relationships using linear equations and number sentences as well as identify linear and simple non-linear number patterns. Students may be asked to identify relationships presented as models or tables or to solve simple-worded problems and number sentences. Students can use equivalences to identify inequalities and patterns.
• Measurement, chance, and data: In this field, students measure and compare properties using relationships between standard units and scales. Students may also be asked to read analogue and digital clocks and convert between metric units. They can also calculate the probability of an event and interpret data presented in graphs and tables.
• Number: In this field, students identify, represent, compare, and order integers and common fractions using a variety of methods, including the four operations. Students should know the different representations of fractions and be able to divide decimals by 10 and 100. Problems may include simple rates, proportions, and addition of decimals with the same decimal place or money value. Students may use strategies and estimations to solve such problems.
• Space: In this field, students should identify, describe, and classify common 2D shapes and 3D objects. Student may be asked to identify symmetry and congruence in 2D shapes and visualise simple translations of objects. Students are also expected to read and interpret maps and plans, to find locations based on coordinates, and to estimate distance between two points.
• Working mathematically: In this field, students utilise facts, procedures, and properties of whole, rational numbers and objects, such as fractions, decimals, common 2D shapes, and their equivalent forms. Students may also be asked to read and interpret information from tables, lists, and graphs, or to group objects based on properties. They may also be asked to solve problems requiring two operations, follow a sequence of mathematics operations, and solve number patterns.

## NAPLAN Language Conventions Year 7

The NAPLAN Language Conventions test assesses three components of English writing:

• Spelling: Students should be able to recognise and correct errors in common multi-syllable words with regular spelling patterns, words with silent letters, and words with irregular spelling patterns.
• Grammar and Punctuation: Students should be able to understand common language conventions, such as relative pronouns, clauses, apostrophes for possession, and commas. For example, students may be asked to find the correct verb, personal pronoun, or phrase required to complete a complex sentence. They may also be asked to find the correct subject-verb agreement or to use commas to separate items in a list.

Year 7 students are presented with a wide range of texts, including poetry and persuasive texts. These texts are more complex in nature since they utilise technical vocabulary, varied sentence structure, and intricate phrases and punctuation. After reading the texts, students are asked to demonstrate their understanding of the text and its ideas by answering questions listed in a separate booklet.

• Infer the motivation of a character or the narrator.
• Identify a character's opinions, intention, and significance of actions by analysing ideas presented in the text.
• Analyse a dialogue to understand a character.
• Identify the significance of an event for the main character.

• Identify the intention of the narrator.

• Identify the main idea of a paragraph and the main purpose of the text.
• Interpret information across the text.
• Infer the opinion of a person.
• Utilise text conventions to locate information.

• Locate and interpret information stated in the text, including the definition of words and expressions.
• Identify the main purpose of a text and parts of a text.
• Identify the main idea of a paragraph.
• Infer the writer's opinion.
• Analyse the different views and opinions presented in the argument.
• Identify language conventions, such as lists, posts, and punctuation.
• Identify the common theme presented in different writers' opinions.

## NAPLAN Writing Year 7

Year 7 students are required to write a response to either a narrative or a persuasive stimulus. Some of the diction, grammar, punctuation, and syntax may be precise and complex, but not all. At this age level, students are expected to spell most common words correctly.

• Persuasive writing: Students are expected to write a response that contains an introduction and a conclusion, though both may be weak or ill-defined. The essay should contain enough evidence and elaboration for the reader to follow along as well as a coherent argument. Persuasive devices should be present and used with some success.
• Narrative writing: Students are expected to write a story that contains a beginning and an end, though both may be underdeveloped. The essay should contain enough information and development for the reader to follow along as well as a central storyline. Narrative devices should be present and used with limited success.
