A mechanical aptitude test is usually administered on a computer or in paper and pencil form. Each question has one correct answer, and there are usually three or four optional answers to choose from. There are usually no more than 40 seconds per question.

Most mechanical reasoning and electrical reasoning tests introduce basic concepts of Newtonian mechanics and static and dynamic electricity, the same concepts that are covered in a GCSE level curriculum. However, unlike in GCSE tests, in most cases less calculations are required, and the time allotted to each question is thus much shorter.

The Difference Between Reasoning and Comprehension Tests

Formally speaking, the terms reasoning and comprehension indicate different levels of skills and aptitudes. While comprehension tests require basic understanding of mechanical concepts and terminology in their daily use, reasoning tests may also require higher levels of analysis, including limited numerical calculations and an industry-specific context.

In reality however, assessment companies may use these terms intermittently, and thus it's not always 100% clear what will be the level of the test. The best way to predict the level of the test is by knowing the job profile for which you are applying.

About the SHL Verify Mechanical Comprehension Test

SHL is one of the largest pre-employment test providers worldwide. The Verify Mechanical Comprehension Test is an online, unsupervised aptitude test which SHL administers at the beginning of the assessment process along with other Verify tests. If you are applying to mechanical or technical positions and are about to be assessed by SHL, odds are you will be required to sit this test.

On the test, you are required to interpret images depicting simple mechanical concepts such as levers, gears and pulleys. The test involves 15 questions to be answered in 10 minutes. If you pass this test you will be invited to the assessment centre to continue the assessment. You will then be required to sit a supervised Mechanical Comprehension Test to vouch for your initial score. It is very important to practice in order to increase your chances of getting a chance at the assessment centre.
