Learn how to Become a Firefighter: A Preparation Question

Let’s go through an example question, explaining the thought process behind each of the answer options.

You are in charge of managing a crowd that has gathered to watch a house fire. So far the crowd have been calm, but they suddenly become aggressive and shout insults at one of the casualties being rescued from the house. The insults are distressing the casualty.

What do you do?

  1. Do nothing - the crowd will get bored of shouting insults soon.
  2. Ask my manager what to do.
  3. Talk assertively to the crowd and tell them to move away from the scene because they are causing a disturbance.

Let’s examine each of these options to see which one is the correct answer.

Option A: A good firefighter needs to be proactive and responsible. This means that doing nothing is not an option as you are in charge. Moreover, your responsibility is the casualty and if they are displaying distress you have to deal with the situation. Therefore this isn’t the correct answer.

Option B: Although this may seem quite an attractive answer, this cannot be the case because as the text states: You are in charge. This means that you have to make the decision, the buck stops with you. Although as a firefighter you will not be making these decisions for a number of years, your employer wants to know how you would deal with it if you were put in the situation. Essentially by selecting this answer choice, you are saying that you don’t know what to do, which is not a good answer.

Option C: By telling the crowd to disperse you are actually taking action to protect the casualty. You have spotted that there is an issue that needs to be taken care of and you have acted accordingly. Therefore this is the correct answer.

Answering the questions: Becoming a firefighter

When tackling issues such as this it is important to remember that firefighters are looked up to in society. This means that they have a certain status. Being timid isn’t something that a firefighter can be if they want to tackle fires. Moreover, part of being a firefighter is education. As you know, a teacher who lacks innate authority will not have control over a classroom. The same is true for a firefighter; you need to be able to be proactive and authoritative to get the job done.
