The Hiring Process at HomeAway

The hiring process is long, and it takes 5 weeks. During this time, you will be required to participate in tests and be interviewed by multiple people. The company primarily looks for people who have the following skills:

  • Keen attention to detail
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Applications

HomeAway Interview Stages

The hiring process at HomeAway requires you to participate in several interviews. These include:

  • Phone interviews. Phone interviews are interviews conducted by telephone. This type of interview usually lasts around 30 minutes, during which candidates are asked a series of questions. Typically, if the phone interview goes well, then the interviewers will ask you to come in for a formal face-to-face interview.
  • Several levels of face-to-face interviews. A series of face-to-face (or in-person) interviews with multiple people. These are usually done gradually with an HR representative, your direct supervisor and another person in a managerial position.
  • Group interviews. In a group interview, candidates will be grouped and interviewed simultaneously with other candidates (between 10-40) by multiple interviewers. These could take well over one hour.

Tests Conducted by HomeAway

HomeAway aims to assess your skills through a number of tests. The job you are applying for influences the types of tests and their number which may include:

  • English tests. These are used during the job application process, among other tests, depending on the skills needed and the job itself. These tests assess general language skills and specific fields like Vocabulary, Grammar, Spelling and more.
  • A Microsoft Word test. The Microsoft Word test measures your ability to complete tasks in Microsoft Office Word software at various levels. It can be formatted as a multiple-choice test or an interactive test.
  • A Microsoft Excel test. A basic level Excel assessment test aims to evaluate your abilities to use this software for everyday office tasks - more common for entry level and administrative roles. It will probably include almost no advanced questions such as functions and macros. Most of the questions deal with basic formatting, standard tables and basic commands such as saving and printing properties (page breaks and print area definition). You will also be required to know how to define a cell reference, filter, and sort data and manage the page layout. However, basic is not necessarily easy. You still have to know the software's fundamentals.

The more important tests you’ll have to pass are CEB’s SHL tests, which include:

  • CEB SHL Numerical Test: On the test, you are presented with different numerical data items in the form of graphs and tables. After careful analysis of the figures, you need to answer multiple choice questions relating to the data.
  • CEB SHL Verbal Reasoning Test: This test is designed to assess how well you use written information. You will be presented with a paragraph of text and a statement based on that text. You need to come to a conclusion as to whether this statement is true, false, or impossible to say based on the text presented.
  • CEB SHL Logical Reasoning Test: On this test, you are presented with a series of shapes following some pattern. Your task is to identify this pattern and choose the next shape in the sequence from a list of options.
  • Personality Test: The purpose of the SHL personality test is to assess how well you fit with HomeAway values.
  • Situational Judgement Test: On this assessment, you are presented with a number of different work-based scenarios and a series of potential responses to those situations. You must choose the responses you find most and least effective.
