The Devon and Somerset fire and rescue service covers three main areas: Somerset, Central and Western Devon. This is a large area covering over 1.6 million people. In all there are close to 90 separate fire stations and they aim to respond to any emergency within 10 minutes.

Like other fire and rescue services, there is no fixed time for Devon and Somerset fire brigade recruitment. They recruit only when they need to, and this may happen only every couple of years. There are more opportunities if you wish to be a retained/ on-call firefighter. However, competition for these spaces is high so it is worthwhile to be fully prepared and ready to grab your chance when the opportunity arises.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Recruitment

The Devon and Somerset fire and rescue service recruitment process has a number of stages. You must ensure you are fully prepared for every aspect of the process in order to give yourself the best chance of success. The stages are as follows:

Application Form

You have to complete a detailed application form for Devon fire and rescue jobs. This includes sections on your relevant experience, possible criminal record, references, and other information. When completing the application form you must try to incorporate the firefighter Personal Qualities and Attributes, or PQAs, to present your skills in the best possible light.

Firefighter Written Tests

After successfully completing the firefighter application form you are invited to a fire station to sit the firefighter written tests. These are:

  • Understanding Information: A test on your verbal comprehension skills.
  • Working with Numbers: A numerical test assessing your mental arithmetic skills.
  • Situational Awareness and Problem Solving: An SJT assessing your ability to think clearly under pressure.
  • National Firefighter Questionnaire: A personality test seeing how well you fit into the PQAs.

These four firefighter tests assess your verbal, numerical, situational judgement and personality skills as they relate to your possible future role as a firefighter. These are commonly known as the firefighter written tests and are used for many fire services across the country. You can see some examples of these questions on our blog.

Learn more about these tests and practice them with JobTestPrep.

Practical Assessment

This national firefighter selection test assesses your physical capability as a firefighter. There are seven tests in this section including a ladder climb, a test of your ability to work with equipment, an enclosed space exercise and more. All must be performed whilst wearing full firefighter uniform to ensure a proper representation of the real thing.
