Danish Refugee Council’s Hiring Process

  •  The application: Filling out an application that attracts attention and helps you stand out from your competition takes careful reflection on your skills and how they match the role you are applying for. They recommend that your CV does not exceed 3-4 pages. Set yourself apart from other candidates. Let your skills, personality and experience shine through. Only apply for the job where the job description suits your competencies, and where you really think you are a great match. Shortly after submitting your job application, you will receive an automatic email with an application receipt.
  • The Interview: Normally, you will hear from them shortly after the deadline if you are invited for a test or an interview. For certain positions, particularly in management roles, they may invite you to complete a personality assessment as well. Due to the international context they operate in, most of their interviews are conducted through Skype. The interview focuses on three main areas: Your motivation for working with them, how your profile and experience suits the criteria for the role and practical information about the role. Make sure you are familiar with the job and DRC as an organization. Study the job advert carefully and visit their career pages to learn more about them, their history, values, history, etc. If they decide to continue with you as a candidate, they will ask for permission to contact your professional references. They will contact a minimum of two references.

 

The Interviews at Danish Refugee Council

Here is some more information about the different types of interviews you may be required to participate in during the hiring process at the Danish Refugee Council:

  • A phone interview. A phone interview is often used to screen candidates before they come to an interview, however, it could also be used when the employer or the candidate are located out-of-town. These usually last 20-30 minutes and, if successful, will lead to the next stage of the hiring process which is a video interview or an in-person meeting. The typical questions are about the resume, the experience the candidate has, whether the candidate is available to start the job soon, what the salary requirements are etc.
  • A video interview. There are two types of video interviews, a live one, and a pre-recorded one. A live video interview or a Skype interview are done digitally, from the comfort of your home, and although they are seemingly easier than in-person interviews, they can be quite tricky and require practice as there are unique aspects to consider and keep in mind. These usually last up to an hour. A pre-recorded interview is where are given a set of questions which you have to answer while recording yourself. You then send this video to the interviewers.
  • Several levels of face-to-face interviews (when possible). A series of face-to-face (or in-person) interviews with multiple people. These are usually done gradually with an HR representative, your direct supervisor and another person in a managerial position.

 

The Testing Process at the Danish Refugee Council

You will be required to pass the Predictive Index Assessment, which is composed of the following parts: 

  • The Predictive Index Learning Indicator (PI LI) which is a 12-minute test comprised of 50 questions. The purpose of the PI LI assessment is to measure your cognitive ability or your capacity to learn and adapt in the workplace. The test includes three topics: Numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning.
  • The Predictive Index (PI) Behavioral Assessment, on the other hand measures four primary characteristics of personality: dominance, extroversion, patience, and formality. From the view of prospective employers, the goal in administering a PI Behavioral Assessment is predicting workplace performance, and candidates' responses on the PI indicate behavioural propensities. There are two pages on the assessment, each containing a list of 86 adjectives, and the assessment is untimed.

 

Common Interview Questions

The many questions during your interview process are there, primarily, to assess your people skills and the common questions are:

  • Where do you see yourself in five years?
  • Why do you want to work here?
  • Do you prefer to work independently or on a team?

 

What a great opportunity it would be to work for the Danish Refugee Council.
