Cobham’s Hiring Process

The hiring process can take 4 weeks and will consist of three face-to-face interviews and a number of tests. Some tests are general, while others are specific to the job you are applying for. The general required skills, as advertised by the company, are as follows:

  • Effective organizational, planning and prioritization skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively as a part of a team

Cobham Interview Expectations

Cobham has several different interview sessions, which you will have to participate in. The number of interviews and the specific types of interviews depend on the job you are applying for. These include:

  • An initial phone interview. A phone interview is often used to screen candidates before they come to an interview, however, it could also be used when the employer or the candidate are located out-of-town. These usually last 20-30 minutes and, if successful, will lead to the next stage of the hiring process which is a video interview or an in-person meeting. The typical questions are about the resume, the experience the candidate has, whether the candidate is available to start the job soon, what the salary requirements are etc.
  • Video interviews. A Video interview can be live or a pre-recorded. A live video interview or a Skype interview are done digitally, from the comfort of your home, and although they are seemingly easier than in-person interviews, they can be quite tricky and require practice as there are unique aspects to consider and keep in mind. These usually last up to an hour. A pre-recorded interview is where you are given a set of questions which you have to answer while recording yourself. You then send this video to the interviewers.
  • Multiple face-to-face interviews. Face-to-face (or in-person) interviews are a series of interviews, usually three, with multiple people. These will include the HR representative, your direct superior and the head of the department.
  • You may be required to go through a technical interview. During a technical interview, it is not unusual for an interviewer to show a candidate a wiring diagram or a line of computer code and expect instant analysis in a technical interview. Candidates should bear in mind that interviewers are not just interested in technical knowledge (although this is very important) but also how candidates approach problems, construct their thought process, and demonstrate personal skills, such as communication.
  • A panel interview. As the name suggests, a panel job interview is where a candidate is interviewed by a group of interviewers. In most cases, they will be on their own with the panel, particularly if it's for a senior position, but in other scenarios, there could be several candidates and interviewers all in the room at once. In this situation, each interviewer will then ask every candidate a question in turn.

The Tests at Cobham

Candidates are required to pass multiple tests to assess their general skills as wells as specific skills required by the job they are applying for at Cobham and may include the following:

  • The CEB's SHL test. The CEB’s SHL test has several parts to it like the numerical, verbal and inductive reasoning tests. In the numerical reasoning test will encounter numerical data in the form of a table or a graph, followed by multiple-choice questions relating to them. Answering the questions often requires you to show basic math aptitude and to perform calculations involving fractions, percentages, ratios, and conversions. In the verbal reasoning test, you are assessed most typically on your ability to: follow instructions, comprehend verbal passages, show technical understanding, complete sentences, as well as various other verbal related tasks. The skills are assessed on a deeper level in the graduate level tests. In the inductive reasoning test, you are presented with a series of five objects. Your task is to select the object that would come next in the series from the five available option. The test consists of 24 questions to be solved in 25 minutes.
  • If you are applying for a job in the US, you will have to take the Wonderlic test, which has several subsections like the cognitive ability test, the basic skills tests and the personality tests. The cognitive ability has 50 questions and must be completed within 12 minutes. It requires strong analytic skills, quick response times, and good decision-making under time pressure. It is used mainly in job selection and admissions processes and includes math, English, logic, general knowledge, and clerical multiple-choice questions. The Wonderlic basic skills test is a short-form exam of basic verbal and quantitative skills designed mainly to help in screening candidates for entry-level positions and for an educational program or college eligibility. It consists of two sections: verbal (50 questions) and quantitative (45 questions). Each section is 20 minutes long. Lastly, the personality test which evaluates a list of traits that may provide an employer with a better understanding of the personality of the candidate in question, in order to determine the candidate is suitable for the position.
  • A numerical reasoning test. A numerical reasoning test is an area which requires you to not only understand numerical information but also to make decisions and conclusions based on that information.
  • English tests. These tests aim to assess both written and spoken English. They are covering a number of topics such as Vocabulary, Grammar, Spelling and more.
  • A Microsoft Word test. The Microsoft Word test measures your ability to complete tasks in Microsoft Office Word software at various levels. It can be formatted as a multiple-choice test or an interactive test.
  • A Microsoft Excel test. The advanced level test requires a candidate to master the different features of the software. Most of the questions will deal with formulas, macro creation, advanced formatting and document properties.
  • A personality test. Personality tests are one of the most interesting selection tests used by employers. As psychometric tests, they evaluate behaviour, strengths and weaknesses and work-related skills.
