The Hiring Process at Canon

The hiring process can take 2 weeks, during which you will be asked to show your technical and people skills. This will be done through a series of interviews and tests. If you look closely at the requirement on their job applications, apart from very specific skills, required by the job, there are general skills that are required from everybody. These skills include:

  • Analytical, organizational, decision making, and problem-solving skills
  • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Effective organizational, planning and prioritization skills
  • Leadership and supervisory capabilities.

The Tests at Canon

Some of the general tests, that candidates usually require taking are:

  • The numerical reasoning which requires you make decisions and conclusions based on that information.
  • A verbal reasoning test where you will be asked questions that require verbal critical reasoning skills. This test consists of passages followed by statements. You must evaluate each statement according to the given rules.
  • English language or English skills tests are used to assess candidates for jobs where a good grasp of both written and spoken English is necessary. These assessments can cover general language skills but can also be focused on a certain field, such as technical or medical roles where specific vocabulary is necessary.
  • The cognitive ability test which has between 20-50 questions, and it combines various popular cognitive evaluation questions. Such as logic questions, math word problems, verbal syllogisms, spatial reasoning questions, abstract reasoning questions, and more.

The Interviews at Canon

While the hiring process usually consists of three face-to-face interviews with multiple people, you may also come across the following:

  • Phone interviews are interviews conducted via telephone. This type of interview usually lasts between 10–30 minutes, during which are asked a series of questions. Typically, if the phone interview goes well, then interviewers or employers will ask you to take a pre-hire assessment, come in for a formal interview, or attend an assessment day.
  • Skype interviews are just as they sound—interviews held over Skype. These types of interviews are utilized by companies with no "brick and mortar" locations, those hiring candidates abroad, or those looking to cut down on resources. Although seemingly easier than in-person interviews, as you can interview from the comfort of your own home, Skype interviews can be quite tricky and require practice as there are unique aspects to consider and keep in mind.
  • Panel interview: a panel job interview is where a candidate is interviewed by a group of interviewers. Sometimes, when there are many candidates applying for the job, the interviewers will interview a group of candidates simultaneously. Typically, each interviewer asks at least one question. The purpose of these, besides saving time, is to put pressure on the candidates and see how they respond.

Common Interview Questions

During the interviews, these questions may come up:

  • During your work experiences, tell me about a time when you demonstrated that you have the ability and desire to work effectively with your coworkers.
  • Why should we hire you?
  • What can you contribute to this company?
  • Do you work well with other people?
  • How would you describe yourself?
