Working for the Department of Social Services Australia

The hiring process for each of the roles being offered by the DSS in Australia will often vary. The main stages in the Australian Department of Social Services recruitment process are:

  • Application Process: In order to apply for an appropriate position you will need to go to the Department of Social Services careers webpage. From there you will be prompted to create a new user account to begin your online application. Once you have completed the application questionnaire you will be able to submit your CV.
  • Assessment Testing: Depending on the role you have applied for at DSS Australia, you may be required to take one or more pre-hire assessment tests.
  • Written Assignments: On top of psychometric assessments, you may be required to complete a written assignment for the role you have applied for.
  • Assessment Centre: Some roles at DSS Australia may require your attendance at an assessment centre. During this time, you will meet with many other applicants and participate in group exercises and interviews. An assessment centre is often required for those applying for a spot in one of the Department of Social Services Graduate Programmes.
  • Personal Interviews: Once you have passed all of the previous stages in the DSS recruitment process, you may be invited to participate in personal interviews. These interviews will either be held one-on-one, in a group or before a panel.

A selection panel will determine your capabilities, knowledge, skills, and more in order to determine whether you will be able to move forward throughout the DSS recruitment process. If your CV and test scores are matched for the role you have applied for, your application will be short-listed. From this point, you may be required to take additional work-related assessments and participate in interviews. Applicants who are not short-listed in the beginning may not be invited to engage in formal interviews.
