Air traffic controllers hold a lot of responsibility and as such the recruitment process is extensive. The process features a number of air traffic control aptitude tests which include numerical, verbal, inductive and spatial reasoning as well as checking and calculation tests. In this article, we review the major stages of the process and how to prepare to ensure you get the job you are after.

Air Traffic Control Aptitude Tests

In order to ensure that you have all the skills necessary for an air traffic control career, Airservices Australia uses a series of aptitude tests. These are provided by CEB’s SHL and cover a range of skills, including math, verbal, inductive and spatial reasoning, calculation and checking.

Why Practice?

The air traffic control tests are an important stage in the process and you need to pass the tests in order to move forward. The best way to ensure this is by preparing with practice tests as these can help you sharpen your skills and manage your time to get the maximum amount of questions answered correctly.

Numerical Reasoning

What is numerical reasoning? This is not simply a math test as it is looking beyond your ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Numerical reasoning means you ability to actually work with numerical data as it is presented in a graph or chart. Each questions requires you to extract specific details from the data and use it to find the answer.

Calculation tests, unlike numerical reasoning ARE looking at your ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide. But this is not a simple test as it requires you to have quick mental math abilities, meaning you are not given a calculator.

Verbal Reasoning

Verbal reasoning is a test of your ability to draw conclusions from written information. While reading comprehension is necessary during this test, it is not the main challenge. The texts you have to read are short but packed with information and your task is to decide if the statements given about the text are true, false or your cannot say based on the information you have read.

Inductive Reasoning

Inductive reasoning or non-verbal reasoning tests use shapes and patterns rather than numbers and words to present information. Your task is to spot the consistencies in a series of shapes in order to determine which of the possible answers fits best.

Spatial Reasoning

What is spatial reasoning? It is your ability to orient yourself and your spatial awareness. This is a very important skill for air traffic controllers who are always working to best direct aircrafts. On the test, you can expect different questions deal with fitting different shapes into one another and mirror images.

Error checking tests see how quickly and accurately you can analyse data. Each question gives a string of data and you are asked to pick out certain details from the data as fast as possible.
