The PIRT Test

The Police Initial Recruitment Test, also referred to as PIRT or PIR, is a series of screening tests used by the police services in the UK to assess police candidates. The recruitment process includes a visit to a police assessment centre, where you are being evaluated through a series of tests, simulations and interviews. Although some police areal forces design the initial recruitment test slightly different from each other, they generally all share in common a group of test types.

Either administered in the police assessment centre, or elsewhere, The PIRT assesses many competencies, some of which are evaluated by police aptitude tests:

  • Numerical reasoning skills
  • Logical reasoning skills
  • Speed vs. accuracy skills
  • Verbal abilities

For example, candidates that are sent to the police assessment centre for the MET police test go through the following:

  • Interview (20 minutes)
  • Numerical reasoning test (12 minutes)
  • Verbal logical reasoning test  (25 minutes)
  • Two written exercises
  • Four 5-minute interactive role-play scenarios

These tests measure your ability to write clearly and accurately, as well as your ability to make logical conclusions when presented with written text. Further, the PIRT measures your numerical reasoning skills and your ability to scan and check information quickly and accurately.

Practice for Police Tests

Since numerical and verbal skills can be dramatically improved with relative ease in comparison to abstract abilities, it is strongly recommended you make use of your time prior to the assessment and practice as much as you can.

At JobTestPrep we have a wide range of aptitude tests that help you improve your skills in all areas. Some of the tests are very similar in format to the tests you are likely to face in the PIRT, while others differ with the intention of providing comprehensive preparation for these psychometric tests and improving your aptitude skills in general.

In addition, JobTestPrep offers in depth training for personality tests, job interview and group exercise – all are an integral part of the assessment centre you are likely to attend.
