The term numeracy test is often used to describe two types of tests that are commonly used in pre-employment selection processes:
- Numerical reasoning tests and numerical critical reasoning tests, in which inferences are to be drawn from numerical data with the use of calculations and estimations. To read more about this, go to numerical reasoning test.
- Tests that assess numerical literacy, i.e. the ability to understand basic mathematical concepts and carry out simple arithmetic calculations. continue reading about this in the following article.
About numeracy tests and numerical literacy Numeracy tests, also known as quantitative literacy tests, measure the extent to which people can carry out mathematical operations in everyday life situations, in particular arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
In these tests, candidates are presented with word problems and other simple types of numerical data in the form of charts and/or tables and are asked to answer questions in a multiple choice format or alternatively provide their own answer by manually entering it to the computer. An important fact is that the majority of numeracy tests do not allow the use of a calculator.
The most common principles that are examined in these tests are:
- The four basic operations.
- Fractions, and decimals.
- Percentages and ratios.
- Rounding numbers.
- Understanding the principles of graphical representations.
- Transitions of numerical data from tables to graphs.
- Averages.
- Basic geometry concepts.
