Morgan Stanley Recruitment Process

There are many different stages of the Morgan Stanley recruitment process, particularly for the Morgan Stanley graduate scheme. We will outline each step below in more detail in order to give you a full understanding of what Morgan Stanley want their candidates to go through.

The different steps are:

Morgan Stanley Online Application Form

This is the first step of the Morgan Stanley recruitment process and applies to not only for those applying to the Morgan Stanley graduate program but to every position. There are a few key points to bear in mind when completing this form. First of all, you are given the opportunity to upload your CV as well as a cover letter. These two items cannot be underestimated as they not only are the keys to get you through to the next stage but also will be used in the future as basis for your Morgan Stanley interview. If you produce a good enough application form you will be invited to take the Morgan Stanley aptitude tests.

The Morgan Stanley Aptitude Tests

Once the application has been accepted, you will be sent a request to undergo a combination of four possible tests: Numerical reasoning, Verbal reasoning, and Speed/Accuracy checking. These tests have been provided by Kenexa, one of the biggest aptitude testing companies around. More information about Kenexa Tests. The different tests are:

Morgan Stanley Numerical Test

In this test you will be given 20 questions to answer in a 20-minute time limit. You will be presented with information which assesses your ability to interpret and analyse numerical data, work out percentages, ratios, and understand different charts. The Morgan Stanley Kenexa numerical test not only assesses your ability to understand complex numerical data but also your ability to work under pressure. You only have approximately one minute per question and this means that if you are not at the top of your game you will not be able to do yourself justice. Hence, a thorough understanding of these tests is necessary to help you succeed. 

Morgan Stanley Verbal Reasoning Test

In this Morgan Stanley online test you will be presented with a passage of information sometimes related to the financial world but often on a subject that is esoteric. The text in the Morgan Stanley verbal reasoning test often contains a host of different facts that are often only loosely related to one another. You will have to answer multiple choice questions relating to the text, usually three of four questions per text. You will only have approximately 30 seconds to answer each question so in order to succeed practise is highly recommended. This will give you an understanding of the style of questions, and how to work under severe time constraints. 

Morgan Stanley Checking Test

This Morgan Stanley online test is vastly different to the other online tests that you will take in that your analytical skills are not under the microscope here. However, your ability to work under pressure is. You will be presented with a string of numbers and you have to compare the given number to a sheet of numbers that are very similar to your one. You will have 32 comparisons to make in the two minute time frame.

Morgan Stanley Logical Reasoning Test

As well as the previous online tests, for some applying to the Morgan Stanley graduate program you will be asked to take a logical reasoning test. These tests assess your ability to identify a pattern among a set of different objects, understand how each one relates to the next and work out the shape that is missing. 

If you do well enough in these Morgan Stanley online tests you will proceed to the next step of the Morgan Stanley recruitment process, the telephone interview.

Morgan Stanley Interview

If you have been successful at the previous stages of the Morgan Stanley recruitment process, you will be invited to take part in a Morgan Stanley telephone interview. This is a 45 minute competency based interview and you will have to demonstrate a real desire to work for Morgan Stanley at the same time. Some example questions include:

  • Please give me an example of when you had an idea that was different from the rest of your team. How did you deal with this?
  • Please explain any complex concept of your choice in simple terms.
  • Tell me about a time when you had to deal with a difficult task and the steps you took to accomplish the task.
  • Why have you chosen this department?
  • Why did you apply to Morgan Stanley?

You will also get asked on your chosen division in more detail including points about what it entails, who are the regulatory bodies, and things similar to this.

When answering these questions it is recommended that you use the STAR method as well as incorporating the key competencies of the company. They are listed in your job application so make sure you are completely at ease with them. Try out our Skype based interview for the complete preparation.

If you do well enough in the Morgan Stanley telephone interview you will be invited to a Morgan Stanley Assessment Centre.

Morgan Stanley Assessment Centre

Once you have completed the previous steps you will be invited to participate in the Morgan Stanley assessment centre. This is only a half day assessment centre but there are a number of different activities that you will face. We will outline them below.

Morgan Stanley Interviews

There are two separate interviews that you will receive at the Morgan Stanley assessment centre. Each of them is 45 minutes in length with one of them being more skills based whilst the other will be more competency based. Some Morgan Stanley interview questions at the assessment centre include:

  • Give me an example of a skill that you have acquired and used it.
  • Tell me about a time when you were wrong.
  • Tell me about a time when you disagreed with other members of your team.
  • Tell me about a time when you had to communicate with a member of the team that you found difficult to deal with.
  • Can you tell me about a time when you faced a major challenge.

For each of the questions you will face a probing for more detail from the two interviewers. You will also need to explain your CV and qualifications, what you learned from the courses that relate to your prospective duties in the company, and why you think you are a good fit for Morgan Stanley.

Morgan Stanley Group Exercise

In this part of the assessment centre, candidates who applied for the Morgan Stanley graduate program will take part in a group exercise. In this assessment, you will be split up into groups of six and are given a budget concerning a business acquisition. It is your task as a team to decide how to allocate the money. Each of you will be given a different department to represent and you have to convince the other members of the group that your department needs X amount of money. You have 30 minutes to discuss this with other members of the team. There is however, one big surprise and that is that half way through your discussion one of the assessors appears and announces that the budget has been slashed by 50%.

As well as this, you should be preparing your results for a five minute presentation as a group on your decision. In a sense, this is similar to a case study interview where you present factual evidence to back up your findings.
