About mechanical aptitude tests
Candidates from a wide range of industries may encounter these tests: Army, medicine, engineering, crafts men, and any job that involves the maintenance, operation and fixing of mechanical equipment. The difficulty level of these test varies according to the required skills.
What does the test look like?A mechanical aptitude test is usually administered on a computer or in paper and pencil form. Each question has one correct answer, and there are usually three or four optional answers to choose from. Since most questions do not require complex calculations, there are usually no more than 40 seconds per question.
Most mechanical reasoning tests introduce basic concepts of Newtonian mechanics and electricity, the same concepts that are covered in a GCSE level curriculum. However, unlike in GCSE tests, less calculations are required, and it is more about understanding concepts. Here is a list of the most popular subjects that appear in these tests:
- Forces and motion - acceleration, gravity, friction, pressure, moments, etc.
- Energy - transformation, kinetic and potential energy, work and power.
- Popular questions: levers, pulleys, screws, gears, springs, etc.
- Circuits - parallel, series.
- Voltage, resistance, current, capacitors, and charge.
- Popular questions: Circuit diagrams, etc.
- Conventions and units.
- Tools, terminology.
