British Airways recruit at all levels. As the BA graduate scheme is the most detailed recruitment process, we will review the steps in this article. There are many assessment options in the BA graduate scheme and it is important to pay attention to your recruitment correspondence to know what applies to you. The following is an outline of the recruitment process:
British Airways Application FormThe BA application form is slightly different from many other online application forms in that for the BA graduate schemes you will need to answer some technical and situational judgement (SJT) questions as well. You may be given these tests if you applying for the British Airways cabin crew positions as well. For more information about these tests click here.
Before you apply for the role, you will see a page with details of the job description. There are two things of note on this page. The first thing is that you will see the key competencies relating to the specific job. Each role has different competencies and you will be tested on the ones in that role. Make sure you know them well. As well as this, you will also have some questions at the bottom of the page. They are going to be the questions that you will need to answer in the actual application form. There is a time limit on these questions so it is a good idea to prepare the answers in a text file in order to enable you to copy and paste into the BA online application form.
An example of a competency question is:
Describe a situation when you had to lead a team towards a common goal?
These questions are notoriously difficult to answer and without an understanding of how to you are sure to not perform to your best. We at JobTestPrep have a package specifically designed to help you answer these questions in the perfect manner.
British Airways Aptitude TestsAfter you have completed the BA online application form successfully, you will receive a series of online aptitude tests. British Airways use many different types of tests that are produced by SHL and for each role a different combination is used. You will see on your application which ones you will be taking. They possible tests are:
BA Situational Judgment test (SJT) These tests are normally used in roles involving customer relations. They are used to assess a candidate’s reaction to certain possible events that they will encounter in the actual job. For more information and practice click here.
British Airways Numerical Reasoning TestThese tests are designed to test your numerical and critical reasoning skills. You will be given numerous pieces of information through means of graphs and charts and you have to work out the correct solutions. For more information about these tests as well as practice tests.
British Airways Verbal Reasoning TestWith regard to this test, you will be given a paragraph of information with some multiple choice questions on it. Based on the text, you have to select the correct answer. This is done under severe time constraints and you need to work fast in order to complete the test in the time allotted. Without practice and training in these tests you won't be able to perform to the highest level. Get practice here at JobTestPrep.
British Airways Logical Reasoning TestThese tests can really be described as non-verbal reasoning tests. You are given a sequence of different shapes and patterns and you will have to analyse the different possible answers and choose the correct one. Again, these are done under severe time constraints and you will have about 20 minutes with which to answer as many questions. Practice is your way of guaranteeing that you will be fully prepared when the time come to take the actual test.
Whatever tests you receive at this stage of the application will be redone on paper at the actual BA assessment centre. For this reason it is a worthwhile investment of time to practice and practice these tests in order to give you the best possible chance of success.
British Airways Personality QuestionnaireYou may have already had a taster of the personality questionnaire. This is given as part of the BA psychometric test battery and it is used to assess how your personality will fit with the job in hand and your style of integration within a team setting.
British Airways InterviewsApplying for a job at BA, be it for the British Airways pilot scheme, the BA cabin crew or in the graduate scheme you will have to go through three interviews.
One will be a British Airways telephone interview, a second will be conducted via a video and the third will be with two members of the HR team at the BA assessment centre. They are all competency based and they last for half an hour with regards the first two and an hour for the face to face one.
Preparing yourself properly for these interviews is very important as they are often the make or break of your job application. This means knowing the British Airways core competencies that were listed on the job description as well as having clear answers as to why you want to work for BA. The best way to answer these questions is by using the STAR based answer method where you show through a previous experience how you have demonstrated the key competencies and skills before. If you are successful in this stage of the application process, you will be invited to attend a British Airways assessment day.
BA Assessment CentreIf you have done well enough till this point you will be invited to the final stage of the application, the BA assessment day. Various positions will be given different tasks but we will go through what you should expect in the whole.
Aptitude TestsYou will be required to take the same tests that you took online in a paper format. These serve as validation of the previously gained results.
BA PresentationYou will be given some information to prepare a 10 minute presentation to be given after 25 minutes. The subject is dependent on the job applied for. For information on how to succeed in these presentations click here.
Face-to-face InterviewAs we explained earlier, this is a one hour interview with 2 members of the HR team and is mainly competency based. Make sure you brush up on the British Airways core competencies before this interview because the more you can show that you have them, the more impressed they will be.
Group ExerciseThe group exercise is designed to assess your ability in working with a team as well as your problem solving ability. You will be given a task that is suited to your job application and you will have to come up with a solution to a problem. The idea here is not only to work out a good, workable solution, but also to see how you interact with fellow workers. Learn about group exercise at assessment centre.
Role PlayYou may be asked to take part in a role play exercise. You will be together with two assessors, one of them will play the part of a customer and you have to play the part of the staff member answering their questions and dealing with their problems in the correct way. The other assessor will be taking notes in the background. For information on how to deal with role play scenarios, click here.

"Thank you very much. I passed my psychometric test for a pilot position after using this for 3 months. Again, TQ, TQ and TQ."
"Believe it or not it was for a PA role... I can tell you, though, that I tried an SHL free practice test first and scored only 43%. So I bought your package and after practising with your tests I actually scored in the 90s percentile on the actual test itself."
